Our Vision
To become an internationally recognized center of excellence in gender studies.
The Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) at the University of Rwanda is dedicated to training gender experts, stimulating research and building the partnerships needed to promote gender awareness at local, national, regional and international levels.
To become an internationally recognized center of excellence in gender studies.
To train gender experts and practitioners, stimulate research and documentation in gender fields and help to build the networks and partnerships needed to promote community gender awareness at the local, national, regional and international level.
The Centre for Gender Studies has grown from a small institute initiative into one of the University of Rwanda's dedicated centres for gender teaching, research and outreach. Its evolution reflects both the national commitment to gender equality and the steady demand for gender expertise across the public, private and non-governmental sectors.
The Centre has developed in four key stages, each marking a significant expansion of its mandate and reach.
The Centre was initiated in 2009 by the former Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) as the Centre for Gender Culture and Development (CGCD).
FoundedThe first cohort of 50 students was recruited in 2010 for the Master of Social Sciences in Gender and Development.
First intakeIn 2013, with the merger of public higher learning institutions to become the University of Rwanda, the centre was renamed the Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) and placed under the College of Arts and Social Science.
Institutional mergerIn 2019, the CGS started two PhD programmes — the PhD by Research in Gender and Development and the PhD by Research in Gender Studies.
