Brief overview of the CGS

The CGS was initiated in 2009 by former Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) as the Centre for Gender Culture and Development (CGCD). The first cohort of 50 students was recruited in 2010 for the Master of Social Sciences in Gender and Development. In 2013, with the merger of public higher learning institutions to become the University of Rwanda, the centre was renamed Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) and placed under the College of Arts and Social Science. In 2019, the CGS started 2 PhD programmes - PhD by Research in Gender and Development & PhD by Research in Gender Studies.
